As we step into a fresh year, we're revisiting the highlights of 2023 and reflecting on our accomplishments and efforts. The past year was marked by dynamic transformations, making it a compelling year for growth and progress.

Throughout 2023, a heightened focus on attention, sustainability and performance set the tone for significant developments. In this post, we cover how advertisers are improving attention and campaign performance, how sustainability evolved beyond just a buzzword, some of the awards Sharethrough won, and the dedicated team behind it all. Check out Sharethrough’s 2023 Wrapped for a recap of our journey.

Improving Attention and Performance Through Ad Enhancements

At Sharethrough, we’re always improving the performance and attention of ad campaigns through ad enhancements. Like our AI-powered Dynamic Video Captions which can improve attention by up to 80% and for 40% less CPCV than the industry average.

But that’s not all - in our initial research, Sharethrough found that viewers are 58% more likely to pay attention to ads that feature useful content alongside them. Sharethrough provides several CTV ad enhancements designed to capture attention and increase performance for advertisers.

In 2023, we released new versions and updates of our CTV ad enhancements, including our CTV Weather Overlay, which shows the weather and forecast of the city where the ad is served, which can increase attention by 9%. We also launched a version of our CTV Countdown Overlay for instream and display ads. After conducting some further research of our Display Countdown enhancement, we found that the banner ads had a 106% increase in awareness for upcoming promotions.

These are just some of the reasons why over 1 Million advertisers place their trust in Sharethrough to improve their campaign performance and grab their target audiences’ attention through our ad enhancements.

Turning Sustainability Awareness into Action

2022 was the advent of sustainability in digital media and advertising, and the industry’s awareness of its carbon emissions grew to a point where it could no longer be ignored. In 2023, we saw organizations begin their sustainability efforts and take climate action.

2023 was also a pivotal year for us at Sharethrough as we hosted the industry’s first-ever Green Media Summit in New York. This sold-out, standing-room-only event brought together industry leaders from across the digital media and advertising industry to discuss and share their learnings about sustainability and reducing and removing carbon emissions. This success naturally leads us to host yet another Green Media Summit in 2024, so grab your tickets before they sell out again.

It’s inspiring to us to see advertisers’ desire to take climate action. Using Sharethrough’s GreenPMPs™ and Low-Emissions PMPs, advertisers delivered over 1.8 Billion carbon neutral impressions (track real time progress at greenpmp.io). The equivalent of 705 round trips from Boston to London per passenger, charging 415 Million smartphones or heating over 2,900 US homes per month.

Sharethrough was also the first SSP to ban Made for Advertising (MFA) sites from our inventory, resulting in 18% fewer carbon emissions without any negative impact on campaign performance. MFA sites generate 26% more carbon emissions than high-quality publishers while wasting 15% of advertisers’ spend. By diverting away from MFA sites, advertisers can fund reputable publishers that have lower emissions and provide meaningful performance.

We also launched Sharethrough’s Net Zero Publisher Program, supporting publishers’ measurement costs for the first year and providing them with accurate reporting of their carbon footprint. Additionally, publishers that participate in the Net Zero Publisher program are also added to Sharethrough’s Path to Net Zero PMP, where advertisers that want to prioritize sustainable publishers who are committed to or working on committing to net zero emissions.

An Industry-Leading Ad Exchange You Can Trust

We’re honored to win 7 awards for Sharethrough in 2023. From AdExchanger’s Programmatic Top 50 Players to Deloitte Canada’s Best Managed Companies, these awards and others are recognition that Sharethrough is an industry-leading ad exchange you can trust.

We’re active with clients and industry events, and several of our leadership teams were featured in speaking engagements. Ben Skinazi, CMO, spoke about sustainability at Digital Day Camp in Toronto. Curt Larson, CPO, presented about how to capture audiences' attention and improve outcomes at ATS London. Frank Maguire, VP of insights, strategy and sustainability, spoke at Climate Week about how the advertising industry is racing to reach net zero emissions.

Next to the research we conduct for Sharethrough’s ad enhancements, we also conduct consumer research to help our advertiser partners better understand and target their audiences. We’ve surveyed folks in the US between the ages of 18-55+ about their video-watching habits which revealed some unique generational differences like how 66% of Millennials and Gen Z prefer to watch TV on their phones over the big screen. Read the full white paper here.

We also completed a research study of people in the US and Canada between the ages of 18-55+ about their holiday shopping plans to find out that 52% of all consumers expected to spend at least half of their holiday shopping during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. That white paper is here

Sharethrough and some of our leadership team have also been featured or mentioned over 30 times in leading industry publications such as Digiday, AdExchanger and AdWeek and others to provide commentary on various top-of-mind topics like CTV, MFA sites and sustainability.

Incredible Humans Building Human-Centric Products

Behind all these achievements at Sharethrough is a team full of talented individuals working together to build best-in-class products and services. Sharethrough has been consistently named one of the best companies to work for and we have an above industry average retention rate. Some individuals have been with us at Sharethrough for over 10 years!

So what goes into building such a top managed team? We attribute this success to not only the competitive compensation package we offer employees, but also some of the additional benefits that come with working at Sharethrough. Like our Work From Anywhere program that enables Sharethroughers to work from any place or country for up to 60 days of the year. Additionally, offsite team building like our company trip to Mexico, where employees got to meet with their coworkers face-to-face while hosting educational workshops or sessions to generate new ideas. It’s thanks to many of these incredible offerings that Sharethrough is proud to have an above industry-average retention rate of 3.4 years.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion play a vital role in Sharethrough’s company culture, and in 2023 we had two incredible teams dedicated to leading the charge in making DEI a priority, bringing forward DEI initiatives across all sides of the business: Sharethrough’s DEI Task Force and our Women & Allies Employee Resource Group.

In May, Sharethroughers attended the first-ever Women in Tech Global Conference, which featured more than 700 speakers across 172 countries across three days of engaging and inspiring content. Other notable community company-wide events included: Pride Week, Earth Week, Caring Month, National Hispanic Month, Truth and Reconciliation Day, and Volunteer days, where employees had the opportunity to give back across communities in New York, Chicago, Boston, Montreal, and Los Angeles.

Sharethrough’s women and allies employee resource group was unveiled in July 2023, and is led by Kimberley Stone, Sales Development Director, London. The Women & Allies ERG provides a space for Sharethroughers to share ideas, experiences, and support each other's growth and development.

Thank you to everyone who made Sharethrough’s 2023 another successful year

2023 couldn’t be as great as it was without the support of Sharethrough’s partners and people. Releasing updates to our CTV enhancements to better capture attention and improve performance is a testament that CTV is only getting bigger and better. It was also inspiring to see the digital ad and media industry take greater action towards sustainability. From the awards won and speaking opportunities, to growing our team, 2023 was an eventful year for us at Sharethrough, to say the least.
