As the holiday season is wrapped up, the spirit of giving back to our communities shines brightly at Sharethrough.

At the end of the year, employees had the opportunity to embody our belief in making a positive impact beyond our professional endeavors and embracing one of our core values; caring. In this post, we cover the volunteering activities that we carried throughout the months of November and December at Sharethrough, and the impact…

What is Sharethrough’s ‘Volunteer Day Program’?

Food banks, shelters, and community support programs have seen a surge in demand for services in the past year. Feeding America reported a 60% increase in demand for food assistance due to the pandemic, showcasing the pressing need for volunteers in such organizations. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, in the United States alone, more than 64 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.8 billion hours in the latest reporting year. However, the demand for volunteers is still greater than the current initiatives.

The Sharethrough team had the opportunity to volunteer during work hours, utilizing one of our company benefits: Volunteer Day hours. Business aside, we have a duty as people to improve our communities to help build a better future. One day per year each employee can participate in an activity and charity on the day of their choice.

4 Volunteering Experiences to Connect Sharethrough to Our Communities

This year, the essence of the holidays was not only felt within our office walls but also reverberated through the communities we serve. In 2023, a total of 48 employees (equivalent to 32% of our workforce) wholeheartedly engaged in various volunteering activities.

From Montreal to Chicago, Los Angeles to Boston, Sharethroughers united to volunteer their time and effort with esteemed organizations. Ronald McDonald House Charities, Cradles to Crayons, Multicaf, Toys 4 Tots—these are just a few among the many organizations that benefited from the altruism and commitment of our team.

And what better way to hear about the collective impact they had on their communities than to hear from them directly. We asked a few of them what they thought about their experience.

1. Volunteering with ‘Toys for Tots’ in Los Angeles, California

The mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is to assist the U. S. Marine Corps in providing a tangible sign of hope to economically disadvantaged children at Christmas. This assistance includes providing day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Program, raising funds to provide toys to supplement the collections of local Toys for Tots Campaigns, to provide promotional and support material and defray the costs of conducting annual Toys for Tots Campaigns.

A few employees opted to volunteer alongside clients. Carlo Robles, Account Executive at Sharethrough, said: “‘Toys for Tots’ was a great bonding experience with some of our closest clients at an industry charity event. Gathering together with such a tight knit industry to share the warm Holiday spirit was infectious. This was my first ‘Toys for Tots’ event and it was a memorable time!”

2. Volunteering with ‘Ronald McDonald House’ in Chicago, Illinois

From preparing food, and serving food, the Chicago team of 8 gathered for the afternoon to volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. Ronald McDonald House provides more than 2.2 million overnight stays each year, helping families save nearly over more than $611 million in lodging and meal expenses. Their vision is to A world where all children have access to medical care and their families are supported and actively involved in their children’s care.

With team-building on his mind, Jamie Rathsburg, Senior Client Solutions Manager at Sharethrough, said: “I feel so fortunate to work for a company that values and promotes volunteer opportunities. The time we spent at the Ronald McDonald House was not only a great team-building experience, but it was also extremely rewarding knowing that we were helping so many families in need.”

Also volunteering for Ronald McDonald House, Kerry Trewartha Senior Account Executive added: “Volunteering with my team was such a rewarding and fulfilling experience! We prepared and served 100+ meals for the children and families staying with the Ronald McDonald House. It was an amazing experience to be a part of a community that provides support and comfort for families facing challenging times.”

3. Volunteering with ‘Multicaf’ in Montreal, Canada

MultiCaf’s mission is to provide food aid, create social connections and seek resources for low-income people. By offering economical meals and various emergency food services, each year the organization allows hundreds of low-income individuals and families to continue to eat well, in addition to providing a place for meeting and socializing, often compensating for the feeling of loneliness and isolation they experience individually. With 15 Sharethrough volunteers, the group was split up to tackle all the tasks that needed to get completed for the afternoon. This included washing dishes, cutting and preparing food, cleaning, and restocking the grocery shelves.

Talking about how impactful her experience was, Ariane Simonelis, Legal Counsel at Sharethrough, shared: “My volunteer experience at MultiCaf was genuinely humbling, providing valuable insight into the consistent and impactful efforts they've dedicated over the past 30 years. I contributed by preparing food for affordable meals in their cafeteria, benefiting those in need. The volunteers and staff at MultiCaf are truly exceptional, adeptly weaving social ties and resources to create a nurturing and supportive environment.”

Another Sharethrough employee, Chris Nash, Associate Director at Sharethrough, who participated in the same event shared: “Volunteering is a small but so valuable gesture. I really enjoyed the afternoon spent at Multicaf, cooking, cleaning, and helping the small team of employees run their large operations.  It is great working for Sharethrough, and having the support of a paid volunteer day each year. I look forward to contributing my time again in 2024. If we all gave just a couple of hours from our busy schedules to a local charity, the world would be a better place.”

4. Volunteering with ‘Cradles to Crayons’ in Boston, Massachusetts

Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play. We supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities.

Sharing his experience, Josh Stevens, Strategic Account Lead says “Volunteering at Cradles to Crayons with Scope3 and Digitas was the perfect opportunity for us to collaborate on something meaningful outside of a normal Media Environment. It’s estimated that we sorted, cleaned, and organized appx 400 pairs of shoes for distribution to Massachusetts families living in poverty, which made for an incredibly rewarding day!”
