Women's History Month is a powerful time to recognize, honour and reflect on the remarkable contributions of women who have  been trailblazers for Women's Rights. Where we can look back on the incredible achievements, contributions, and sacrifices that women have made over the years, and to chart a path forward that opens doors and creates opportunities for the next generation of women.

Women's History Month at Sharethrough is a time for us to reflect and learn from the paths of women working in ad tech, and examining the barriers that these women have had to overcome. We recently interviewed several of the women across Sharethrough, asking them questions that ranged from: Which women do you look up to? What advice would you give to younger women? What barriers do you see in the ad tech industry for women?

Continue reading to check out their answers and find out what Sharethrough is doing this year to celebrate international women's day!

Meet the Magnificent Women of Sharethrough

Words of Wisdom: Women in Leadership

Stacy Parkinson, VP People & Culture

As the head of our people & culture, Stacy Parkinson, VP People & Culture, remains vigilant of the ever-present issues surrounding women in the ad tech workforce, as well as across other industries:

“Not only in Ad Tech, but in many areas, some of the challenges women are facing are underrepresentation in leadership positions, presence of pay gaps, along with other challenges associated to work life blend such as taking time off for parental leave, child care and other responsibilities”

We asked Stacy how we can improve on these issues and create a better future for women in ad tech, and her advice starts with:

“Advocating for women in leadership. It’s also important to find true allies and resource groups, consistently placing a DEI lens on everything we do, and both uncover and call out our own biases.”

Lastly, Stacy had some strong words of advice for younger women:

“You don't have to know everything and have all the experience, qualifications, etc for the project, team, opportunity you want... Find your voice, speak up, ask for what you want. Believe in yourself, the way other people believe in you!”

Words of Wisdom: Diversity in Teams

Quanita Ahmed, Senior Data Product Manager

Not only is Quanita Ahmed a dedicated Senior Data Product Manager at Sharethrough, but she is part of our DEI task force at the company as well! For Quanita, placing women in leadership roles is essential:

“The research is clear: diverse teams perform better. We need more women in positions of leadership and influence so we can approach problems with empathy, conviction, and clarity.”

When we asked Quanita about her advice to young women working to get into the world of ad tech, here was her advice:

“Your attitude determines your altitude. Say yes to the hard problems and build your tribe, relentlessly. You can work through the toughest problems with the right attitude and people around you.”

Words of Wisdom: Balancing Work and Life

Laura Stephens, Sales Development Director EMEA

Laura Stephens, Sales Development Director is a mother of one. We asked Laura about motherhood and the challenges that women face in ad tech:

“There are glass ceilings when becoming a mother. This is due to the fact it is largely still expected in society that females are the main carer for their children”

According to Laura, Sharethrough has already made strides in this part of our offerings:

“A work-life balance such as the remote-first opportunities Sharethrough offers us makes us happier as individuals, better cared for, trusting of the company and in return we want to work harder for a company we know genuinely cares about our health and well-being.”

We asked Laura who she most looks up to, her answers are only a Slack Message away:

Our own Laura Bromwich - she has two children and has done incredibly well to be SVP Sales for Sharethrough whilst growing her family. Another woman that I look up to is Kimberley Stone on our sales team in EMEA. She is a strong female with great ideas and a polished pitch. I have learnt so much from her experience in media since joining Sharethrough and feel very inspired by her passion for starting the Women at Sharethrough group to ensure we thrive.”

Sharethrough Women & Allies: What’s your Impostor Syndrome Personality?

Kimberley Stone, Sales Development Director

During Sharethrough’s 2023 kickoff in early February, Kimberley Stone, Sales Development Director came forward to host a Women and Allies workshop aimed at focusing on Imposter Syndrome, and how this can affect both men and women at all levels within the workplace.

We helped attendees identify their 'imposter personality' and gave pointers as to how best to overcome the challenges that this personality may bring within their working environment. Discussing imposter syndrome allowed us to highlight some key facts around women and how they have a higher propensity to be affected by this.

Naturally, this opened a broader conversation around other areas in which women may feel underrepresented and how best, as colleagues and allies, we can address this by having a better understanding and the tools to be able to offer help to one another. Ultimately the workshop was a 'starter for ten' on what the employees of Sharethrough would like to see included within this initiative, to ensure it's as collaborative, inclusive and beneficial as it can be for everyone.

For Kimberley, this workshop was an opportunity not only to showcase a new topic & initiative, but served her as an excellent networking opportunity as well:

“Hosting the Women and Allies workshop at our recent company offsite in Mexico, was not only a great way to introduce the idea of a new initiative to the wider business, but it was also a good networking opportunity for me personally. Working within a company where your peers are spread across the globe can be challenging at times, so getting to meet my fellow Sharethroughers from across all regions and departments of the business allowed me quality time to build better connections.”

Kimberley’s workshop was for an important cause, and she personally felt the need to champion it:

“I’m fortunate to work for a company that already has a great diversity and inclusion ethos at its heart, so for me to be able to propose an additional initiative -that was not only welcomed but encouraged - was really inspiring. Ensuring women are represented and supported at all levels within business is something that’s really important to me. Sharethrough not only embraces this but also recognizes that in order to achieve success we have to bring together both men and women to collaborate on these topics. Educating everyone on issues that have a higher propensity to affect women in the workplace, to have a better awareness, understanding and also the tools to help and be allies for one another is really important. It’s something that I feel we made great headway on within this initial workshop.”

We asked Kimberley about the major takeaways that she witnessed people have from her workshop:

“It was really interesting to see the mix of both male and females that attended my workshop. We talked a lot about Imposter Syndrome, so it was really encouraging to see and hear not just the women, but the men in the room talk about this and share their own personal experiences. I think one of the biggest takeaways for everyone was that they’re not alone in their feelings of this, which I know from experience can be comforting. Everyone in the room had, at some point, felt like an imposter. There were also a lot of really great content suggestions that came out of the workshop that will help to shape what the Women and Allies initiative looks like moving forward. I’m confident that we can deliver a great program that everyone can participate in and take something from.”
