Motherhood is a meaningful, unique, and fulfilling experience that is deserving of recognition and celebration. As caregivers, role models, inspirations and superstars to us all, we look to them to lead, guide and help shape future generations. In the fast-paced industry that is advertising technology, balancing motherhood alongside work can be particularly challenging for new parents.

At Sharethrough, we understand that the company culture, support, and balance we provide are crucial to helping new mothers navigate this transition into motherhood. This Mother's Day, we want to acknowledge and honor the incredible mothers of Sharethrough who have made an immense impact on our company and the lives of their families.

To gain insights into the unique experiences of Sharethrough's working mothers, we asked them a series of questions such as "What has been the biggest challenge you've faced as a mother?", "How do you balance work alongside motherhood?" and "What skills have you learned throughout motherhood that have translated over to the workplace?"

Their responses provide a glimpse into the incredible journey that is motherhood, the daily challenges that this journey brings, and the importance of having teammates and a company culture that supports all mothers along this journey.

Utilizing Workplace Flexibility To Find Balance

Juggling the demands of a full-time job with parenting can be a daunting task. It takes careful planning and prioritization to ensure that both responsibilities are met. However, with the right support systems set up alongside a game plan, it is not only possible to achieve a healthy balance between the two, but to flourish and grow your bond with your children. Laura Stephens, Sales Development Director, EMEA, talks about her biggest challenge she has faced as a mother, and what she has done to overcome it:

“Juggling working full-time and being a good mother was a huge challenge for me. I now prioritize my days much better, I try to do the majority of work when my daughter Evie is at nursery or asleep. Then when she gets home I prioritize her. Playing is so important for children. I make sure I create new activities for us to do whether it's building something out of lego, painting, a home spa-day, nature trails taking a camera to take pictures of bugs or just a visit to the park, this quality time together is so very important to do to ensure you create and have a good bond with your child. Having flexibility at Sharethrough means I can successfully juggle both working and parenting. I feel I am truly doing my best at both now.”

Staying Strong in a “Sleepless Industry”

It’s no secret that the advertising technology industry is constantly shifting and evolving, keeping companies and employees on their toes at all times. For Share Ryan, Senior Account Executive, the day-to-day business of sales requires prioritization and focus. We asked Share about what has been her experience balancing work alongside motherhood:

“Our industry never sleeps; our partners, our campaigns, the growth of knowledge in our landscape is ongoing at all times. Being a mother means that my children, their needs, and learning about their growth also never slows down. Balancing these two has been a thrill but also requires me to quickly shift gears and prioritize what matters at any given time. Sharethrough has allowed me to work flexible hours, and trusts me to keep up at work while valuing that I am able to make the right decision for myself as a mother, and as a passionate member of our industry and Sharethrough.”

While prioritization, focus, and the ability to quickly shift gears are essential to the ad tech industry, the relationship that we have with ourselves is also essential to staying strong through the highs and lows. Share talks about the important of “trusting yourself,” as her advice to new mothers:

“The advice I would give to new mothers is that motherhood is a learning process. It's challenging and some days feel like you've figured it out and then other days feel like you aren't quite sure what you're doing. Just know that every decision you make for your little ones is the right one! Trust yourself.”

Seeing the World With a Fresh Set of Eyes

Stacy Parkinson, VP People & Culture leads the People & Culture team at Sharethrough. With company culture best practices constantly evolving alongside an ever-changing ad tech industry landscape, it’s more important than ever for Stacy to keep employees aligned and energized, approaching her tasks and the company vision with a fresh set of eyes. We wanted to know more about what gives meaning to the moms of Sharethrough, so we asked Stacy about what has been most rewarding part of becoming a mother, her answer credits one of her little ones for giving her this superpower:

“For me, the most rewarding part about becoming a mother has been seeing the world in a different lens, or in a different light - the awe and wonder of discovering something new and learning. My daughter helps me rediscover the little pleasures in life.”

We constantly want things to go right in our lives, and it can be frustrating when mistakes happen. Learning how to live with imperfections and going with the flow is vital to our happiness. For Stacy, the most valuable skill that she has learned from motherhood has been learning how to let go of being a perfectionist:

“The main life changing lesson for me has been to let go of my idea of perfection and to ask for help early and often. I use this everyday at work.”

Motherhood Teachings: Always Have a Backup Plan

For Marion Soumagne, Senior Legal Counsel, having kids and planning for family vacations has taught her one extremely valuable lesson: Have a backup plan. This lesson has carried over to her work in the legal department, especially during a negotiation process:

“With kids, you can't expect that something (a road trip, a visit to the family, a birthday party...) will go as planned. You always need to be prepared for the unexpected. In my daily work, especially during the negotiation process, I always need a back up plan, and I know that I will always figure out a way to manage. And it's just fun to be creative!”

The journey through motherhood is not always easy, we asked Marion what was the biggest challenge she has faced throughout her journey, her answer gives us knowledge into how to live a better life, both as a parent and an individual:

“Admitting the fact that I can't be a perfect mother, a mess is going to happen and that's perfectly OK. I just need to be there for my kids, with the love, the warmth and safety they need.”

Mom Guilt: Love Always Wins

Mila Tokar, Strategic Account Director is a valuable piece of our sales teams, and constantly leading the charge for events & internal initiatives. For Mila, when she’s not working she’s got two twin daughters to look after, which isn’t always easy and has come with challenges along the way.

“One of many challenges I've faced as a mother is overcoming the daily "mom guilt" that many can relate to. It's a feeling that usually sets in at night where you start to question everything you did for your child that day, and for some reason we tend to think about all the negatives, which many don't even think are negatives at all, but we are our own biggest critics.  One way I've learned to overcome this is thinking of all the positives first, including showing up daily, and loving them unconditionally and you quickly realize that there are a lot more of those and it helps ease the anxiety.”

Multitasking is another major takeaway that Mila has mastered through motherhood:

I think one of the biggest lessons and or skills that I've learned as a mom of twin girls is multi-tasking. I've always been pretty good at it, but after having my kids, and two at the same time for that matter, I can proudly say I've mastered this skill. It has definitely paid off applying this knowledge to my day to day at Sharethrough!
