February marks a time of reflection, celebration, and recognition as we commemorate Black History Month. It's a time to honor the contributions, struggles, and triumphs of Black individuals and communities throughout history. From activists and artists to scientists and leaders, Black history is woven with stories of resilience, creativity, and courage that have shaped the world we live in today.

Black History Month urges us to go beyond surface-level recognition and engage in meaningful efforts to address systemic injustices, dismantle barriers to opportunity, and advocate for tangible change. According to Time: “Black unemployment remains at twice the rate of white Americans. Black median wealth is nearly ten times less than white wealth. Black Americans are incarcerated at a rate five times that of their white countrymen.” Black History Month serves as a reminder of this crucial reality. It is designed to prompt acknowledgment from a nation that may sometimes overlook the profound and irreplaceable contributions of Black individuals. It encourages us to confront systemic injustices, advocate for equality, and work towards a more inclusive and equitable society that should be recognized year-round.

How Can We Recognize It?

Education

Take the time to learn about black history, culture, and contributions through books, films, and discussions. Sharethrough partnered with Confetti and took part in a Black History Month Trivia game. This interactive and engaging trivia game challenged participants to test their knowledge of Black history, from trailblazing inventors and artists to groundbreaking innovators and athletes. Through friendly competition and shared learning, we deepened our understanding of the pivotal role that Black individuals have played in shaping our world.

Amplify Black Voices

Elevate the voices and stories of African Americans in your community and beyond. Listen, learn, and show support for black artists, authors, activists, and leaders. At the Montreal Head Office, Sharethrough played a series of Black History Month Spotify playlists featuring music by Black artists, creating an atmosphere of appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and musical contributions of the Black community. A list of Must-Read books by black authors were shared with our employees as well as a list of podcasts about Black History. It’s important to take the time to explore and appreciate Black culture through film screenings, theater performances, art exhibitions, or visits to historical landmarks and museums dedicated to Black history. By engaging and learning from these resources, we not only broaden our understanding of Black experiences, but also ensure they’re stories are being heard.

Take Action

Engage in initiatives that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion at work, school, or community. Support black-owned businesses, and actively challenge discrimination and inequality wherever you encounter it. Sharethrough’s company-wide All Hands were catered by Black-Owned restaurants - Lloydies specifically for the Montreal Head Office, and Rasta Pasta in our Toronto office. It was an opportunity not only to enjoy delicious food but also to support and amplify the voices of Black entrepreneurs within our community. Upon our research, we found a list of black owned restaurants in Montreal that we are excited to support all year!

Continuing the Conversation

While Black History Month provides time for reflection and celebration, it’s also a catalyst for ongoing dialogue and action throughout the year. It's crucial to recognize that Black history is not confined to a single month. It is a continuous journey of resilience, resistance, and triumph that extends far beyond February. While Black History Month provides a designated time for reflection and celebration, it's essential to integrate the lessons and achievements of Black history into our collective consciousness throughout the year.

In closing, let us remember the words of Maya Angelou: "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." May Black History Month serve as a time of reflection, inspiration, and empowerment as we continue to strive for a more just and equitable world for all.
