As part of a larger initiative to develop employees at all levels, the People team at Sharethrough has launched its very first Leadership Development Program.
People Don’t Leave Jobs; They Leave Managers
You may have heard the saying, “People don’t leave jobs; they leave managers.” At Sharethrough, we know how important it is to really take care of all of our employees, and one way we are doing so is by training and empowering our people leaders, who in turn are there to support, develop and coach their team members.
With roughly over 40 managers at Sharethrough, we have several experienced leaders, and we have some first time leaders as well. As part of our 2023 plans, We wanted to create a sense of community for our managers, and give them a chance to learn from each other's varied experiences and backgrounds. We also wanted to provide the leaders at Sharethrough with some practical tools that they can bring into their role as leaders and practice within their teams and fellow collaborations...
4 Workshops We Hosted to Build Better Leaders
One thing is for sure, Sharethroughers all share similar challenges and are all committed to wanting to learn new leadership skills. Here is an overview of some of the sessions we hosted in our two days together in Montreal:
1. Inclusive Leadership
If a company wants to change their DEI culture, it starts with changing the behaviors and mindset of their leaders. This workshop focused on the important role a leader plays in their day-to-day interactions and how inclusion is driven by their actions. We focused on the signature traits of an inclusive leader and how what they say and act as a leader can have an impact on their team's sense of belonging and creates a safe environment for everyone to thrive.
2. Developing Emotional Intelligence
This workshop focused on demystifying what EI is and why it is important in the workplace and how it relates to others. We also worked through how to cultivate compassion with colleagues at work as well on tips on regulating one's own emotions.
3. Equipping Coaching Techniques
This workshop focused on what coaching actually is, when and why leaders should coach. We spent quite a bit of time on the leader's posture as a coach, how to practice active listening and the art of asking powerful questions in order to open up the dialogue with employees.
4. Providing Meaningful and Impactful Feedback
Let’s be honest, most humans are uncomfortable with giving feedback, whether it is positive or developmental. This workshop focused on an easy to remember model to provide clear, specific, valuable, and kind feedback to employees.
At the heart of it all, we focused on our employee experience and ensuring that our employees always feel included. We all know that management is not a “one size fits all,” and leaders are provided with tools to adapt their own personal style to the ones of their employees. The sessions helped us raise awareness of the leaders’ strengths and development opportunities as a leader, and helped us provide the proper tools to enhance their abilities to manage change, communicate, collaborate, strategize, and build partnerships and effective teams.
Developing Our Leaders, One Employee at a Time
Stephen Chou, Manager, Data Science, and a participant in our leadership development program sums up his experience:
“I had a great time at our company’s two-day leadership development program in Montreal, where we talked about a variety of leadership tools that we could all incorporate in our day to day. I especially enjoyed the peer coaching segments, where we were able to practice those tools in a safe and supportive environment. It has helped me put into perspective some of my thoughts and feelings and given me some ideas / cues for more open-ended and empowering discussions with the team.”
“We kicked off our pilot program with a small group of 12 leaders from the US and Canada and plan to eventually roll out the program across the company to all of the leaders at Sharethrough. We started off with a 2 day session in our Montreal Headquarters! More content will eventually be delivered via Zoom, but we felt it was important to take a break from the screens and have some training IRL! Nothing can replace face-to-face interaction and we believe it took some in person time to really create a sense of belonging within this leadership cohort. Out of the 12 participants, only 2 of them had gone through some formal leadership training, which speaks volumes about the need for companies to put resources in place to help grow their managers.”
Laying the Foundation for The Leaders of Sharethrough
Here is what Loretta Carreno, Senior Director Client Solutions and Business Intelligence had to say about our Leadership Development Program:
“I found the Leadership Development Program at Sharethrough engaging and beneficial in refreshing my existing skills, as well as learning new ones. We were able to discuss and put it into practice by doing very specific workshops alongside other managers. We touched on a variety of topics such as Fixed vs Growth mindsets and how focusing on the process instead of the outcome can cultivate a growth mindset in our teams. We learned how to utilize coaching frameworks which I will take with me forever and saw how it can make a big difference in helping my team achieve their goals. I am grateful I had the opportunity to participate in this course and can't wait for the ongoing learning.”
It was so invigorating to see this group get together, share their knowledge and experiences, and remain open and curious about developing their skills and becoming better leaders! I look forward to continuing to be a witness of their leadership journey, and eventually expanding the program out to all of the leaders of Sharethrough.
